What to do if you find injured wildlife
Always ensure your own safety first, particularly by the roadside. Ensure you have stopped in a safe place and have your hazard lights on. Approach all wild animals with care and caution. Call us for help 0498 883 643. Keep an eye on the animal until help arrives. Try to keep the animal in a warm and quiet location, limiting noise and minimising interactions. Do not offer it any food or water.
Handling Kangaroos & Joeys
If the Kangaroo is still alive or conscious, please do not attempt to handle it and ring for help immediately 0498 883 643.
If the Kangaroo is dead, check the underbelly area for a pouch. A bulge or movement from inside the pouch may indicate a live joey. If you feel comfortable to, you can gently remove the joey from the pouch - however it is important to not pull the joey by its legs, or pull it off the teat as this can cause irreversible damage. If you manage to retrieve a joey, its important to provide it with adequate warmth and get it to a licensed carer as soon as possible. Wrap it in a towel and place down your shirt for body warmth, an insulated bag with a hot water bottle can also work until your able to hand it over.
Carefully wrap the bird in towel ensuring the head and claws are covered, being careful of its wings. If possible place in a box in a quiet and dark place. Larger birds of prey should not be handled, please call us for help on 0498 883 643.
